How a Blue Butterfly Helped Me Write Rebel Millionaire

  1. Ah, for anyone reading this — be sure to get your hands on a copy of this amazing zine whilst you can! It is still the best – and simplest – resource I’ve come across on money & investing (and I’ve come across a few, including some of the popular books on investing out there — as well as almost getting sucked into a Pyramid scheme myself!). I wish I’d come across Rebel Millionaire sooner!

  2. This weirdly reminded me of a scene from Three Kings. Two soldiers are discussing courage:

Archie: The way it works is, you do the thing you’re scared shitless of, and you get the courage after you do it, not before.”
Conrad: “It should be the other way around.”
Archie: “I know, but that’s the way it works.”

It would make a tidy moral to the story if a blue butterfly didn’t appear until after you started writing, which would be something like, “Take a small step, and the universe will respond.” But the butterfly was there all along–you couldn’t see it until you had started. Which is fascinating to me, because you were primed to see it, and it was literally bigger than life, and right in front of you. I’m curious what you think–did you feel you didn’t deserve to see the butterfly unless you had made an effort on your own? At any rate, you made the brave choice, and reaped the reward.

A thought from my inner science fiction writer: Marcus is always taking pictures–wouldn’t it be cool if there were pictures of the sofa before you started writing, and the blue butterfly cushion wasn’t there? (cue Twilight Zone music)

Tess and I got our investing/financial life together relatively late. However, I’ve given copies of Rebel Millionaire to a couple of young people whom I thought might act on the advice. It could be a life changing gift, and compared to the benefit, it costs next to nothing. Just saying.

    1. I agree with Archie. You get the courage AFTER you do it, not before. I’ve had to learn that the hard way, over and over again. I think it’s just the way it works, you know?

I don’t know WHY I didn’t see the blue butterfly on the pillow until I started writing. It’s funny and mindboggling but also poignant. I just couldn’t SEE it. Isn’t that so true of many things that we need to see? We can’t see it even if it’s right in front of our noses. We only see it when we absolutely need to see it and often after some sacrifice has been made or a leap of faith or courage has happened. Buuuuuuut, I totally dig your Twilight Zone idea where Marcus took pics of the couch BEFORE I started writing and there was NO BUTTERFLY PILLOW there. YEEEEEKKKK! Freaky AF! 😱

Thank you so much for gifting Rebel Millionaire to some young folks that you thought could benefit from it. I really appreciate it and hope it brought them hope and inspiration to take action. Bravo to you and Tess for recently getting your financial ducks in a row! Yes! That is no small feat. 🦆🦆🦆
